Help put a smile on some faces
It is always good to reach out to help people less privileged than us. The ADTO would like to ask members to join it in supporting Nine Miles of Smiles (NMS), a Canadian-launched volunteer initiative that provides dental care to under-serviced areas in Jamaica.
NMS is seeking volunteers, equipment and funds to continue and expand its good work.
Equipment donations can include working, old items such as bench lathes, handpieces, pressure pots, articulators, light cure ovens/triads, trimming burs for lathe or handpiece, model trimmer, baseplate wax, denture teeth, impression trays and just about anything used in denture fabrication.
As a cause that is in line with what our profession is all about, we encourage you to show your support. The ADTO is donating $2,500 to help fund four third-year Dental Technology students of George Brown College to make the trip to Jamaica to work with the NMS Charity Denture Clinic.
The next clinic will be held from February 8 to 18, 2014.
Since its founding by a Toronto dental hygienist, NMS has striven to increase access to dental care in marginalized communities. From cities to remote towns to isolated villages, volunteers work with local groups to provide much needed dental services and resources for sustainable programs.
